FARMINGTON – A man who allegedly broke into the Wilton Police Station and stole a police cruiser in August was indicted on Monday.
Robert Bowden, 28, of Wilton allegedly pried open a window at the unoccupied, locked police station early Aug. 10 and opened the overhead door and drove a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser about 2.9 miles down the road, crashing it twice before he abandoned it in a ditch.
Police said substantial damage was done to the cruiser.
Bowden, who was allegedly under the influence at the time, was attempting to go to a hospital to see a newborn baby.
The Franklin County grand jury indicted Bowden on felony burglary and operation after revocation of license, and misdemeanor unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
Grand jury members also indicted Bowden and a co-defendant on charges related to an attempted burglary of a Wilton convenience store.
Bowden and Robert J. Decker, 28, of North New Portland, were both indicted on felony aggravated criminal mischief and burglary of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor attempted burglary.
The two men are accused of attempting to burglarize E & N Variety in Wilton in July.
The men allegedly broke windows, cut a 220-volt power line and damaged a refrigeration compressor at the Main Street store.
The pair also allegedly broke into a truck that was parked at the store lot and stole a Sawzall.
