AUBURN – For the past three years, St. Dom’s has fielded soccer teams that played with reckless abandon and gritty determination.
These attributes have given the Saints a state championship and a pair of high-ranked tournament teams.
This season St. Dom’s coach Lee Hixon has thrown down the gauntlet and asked his young squad (16 underclassmen) to play with heart.
“Heart is what will determine where this team goes,” said Hixon.
St. Doms showed a lot of heart and picked up its second win of the season with a 2-0 win over WMC rival Waynflete in the comfortable surroundings of the Saints’ home field Wednesday afternoon.
Tom Gosselin picked up a crossing pass from Nate Brown from approximately 20 yards out and blasted it past the outstretched arms of Reid McMullan (eight saves) for what would prove to be the game-winning goal at 3:35 of the first half.
Holding a slim 1-0 lead midway through the second half, a potential disaster waited to unfold as senior fullback Ryan Guerin was whistled for a red card (flagrant foul). This put the Saints at a man disadvantage for the remainder of the game.
With 1:41 remaining in regulation, Narcisse Agounke picked up a loose ball off a scramble in front of the Flyers’ goal and deposited it in the back of the net for a much needed insurance goal.
“I just took my time found the open space and kicked it home” said Narcisse with a grin.
Ryan Gilbert stopeed nine shots to post the shutout.
