FARMINGTON – The Sandy River Players will open their new season with a full-scale production of “The Fantasticks,” America’s longest-running musical comedy. Directed by Sandy River Players’ veteran Jane Parker, “The Fantasticks” boasts such memorable songs as “Try To Remember,” “Plant a Radish” and “They Were You.”
The show will play at the Mt. Blue High School auditorium on Oct. 1, 2, 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Oct. 10 at 2 p.m.
When it closed in New York City in early 2002 after a run of almost 42 years, “The Fantasticks” held the record (and still does) as the world’s longest-running musical. This is the Sandy River Players’ first production of this fabulous comedy, after a long history of successful musical productions such as “Camelot,” “West Side Story” and “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.”
Cast entirely with local talent, “The Fantasticks” is the story of a boy and a girl who fall in love, despite a long-standing feud between their fathers. What the star-crossed lovers don’t know is that their fathers, who are old friends, contrived the feud as a way of bringing the kids together. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and they all learn a few difficult lessons about life and love before everything gets sorted out.
The unusual set, imaginative costumes, sometimes wild antics and beautiful music combine to make “The Fantasticks” a magical experience.
Tickets can be purchased at Howard’s Rexall in Farmington or at the door. Ticket prices are $12.50 for adults and $8.50 for seniors and students.
