The East Coast Greenway is a 2,800-mile, traffic-free path, linking east coast cities from Maine to Florida. Often referred to as “the urban sister” of the Appalachian Trail, the greenway is accessible to more than 30 million people. Serving those of all ages and abilities, the route passes along gentle terrain and traverses scores of park paths, abandoned railroad corridors, canal towpaths and waterfront esplanades.

The nonprofit East Coast Greenway Alliance was formed in 1991. The group is responsible for guiding the preservation, management and safe use of the greenway by the general public. The alliance helps to link local trails into a continuous route, working through East Coast Greenway committees in each state.
