ANAHEIM, Calif. – Emergency starter Joaquin Benoit pitched two-hit ball into the fifth inning, then six relievers gave up three hits the rest of the way in the Texas Rangers’ 2-0 victory over the Anaheim Angels on Saturday.

Rod Barajas, the No. 9 batter, drove in the Rangers’ first run with an RBI single off Kelvim Escobar (10-11) in the third inning. Pinch-hitter Gary Matthews Jr. added an RBI single off Scot Shields in the ninth.

SEATTLE – Tim Hudson beat the Seattle Mariners for the third time this season and Eric Chavez hit his 29th homer, leading the Oakland Athletics to a 7-4 victory.

TORONTO – David Bush and three relievers combined on a three-hitter, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

MINNEAPOLIS – Miguel Tejada homered twice and drove in five runs, rookie Daniel Cabrera threw six strong innings and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Minnesota Twins 12-3.

CLEVELAND – John Buck hit a two-run homer and Jimmy Gobble allowed two hits over seven innings in the Kansas City Royals’ 7-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians.

ST. LOUIS – Chris Carpenter left with an injury in the fourth inning, but four relievers helped the St. Louis Cardinals complete a six-hitter and win the NL Central title with a 7-0 victory over Arizona.

SAN FRANCISCO – Barry Bonds added another home run to his impressive total, but San Diego’s Jay Payton hit a tiebreaking three-run shot in the seventh to lead the Padres past the Giants 5-1.

Rockies 8, Dodgers 1

DENVER – Joe Kennedy pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and had a two-run triple in Colorado’s five-run seventh, helping the Rockies beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1.

Braves 4, Marlins 2

MIAMI -Jaret Wright allowed just three hits in 8 1-3 innings, and the Atlanta Braves dealt another blow to the Florida Marlins’ fading hopes in the NL wild-card race by winning 4-2.

Astros 4, Brewers 3

HOUSTON – Jeff Bagwell homered and drove in three runs and the Houston Astros rallied to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3.

Reds 6, Cubs 5

CINCINNATI – Wily Mo Pena hit two home runs to offset a pair by Moises Alou and lead the Cincinnati Reds over the Chicago Cubs 6-5.
