The Drama Club at Edward Little High School feels unappreciated, and it’s easy to understand why.
Each year, the club puts on a number of productions at the city-owned Great Falls School. The students use the old school’s auditorium and share space with a number of other community groups. Over the summer, EL’s principal, Jim Miller, was told that some of the Drama Club’s possessions, including flats, props and furniture, needed to be moved so another group could use the club’s storage space near the gym.
With the deadline running out, Miller dispatched school workers to move the materials. The job was done hastily. The Drama Club’s stuff was piled haphazardly. From photos of the scene, the props look like they were tossed in.
When the drama students and their faculty advisers returned from summer vacation, they found their props in disarray. The move came as a complete surprise to them.
This page has attempted to contact both Miller and drama director Penny Appleby. They have not returned phone calls. We do know, however, that there was a meeting Thursday to try to soothe hurt feelings.
Miller, it appears, made a mistake. He didn’t let his students and faculty know about a decision that directly affected them. Care was not taken, and the Drama Club is left to sort out the mess. Better communication could have avoided the problem.
According to City Manager Pat Finnigan, Miller had more than a month to make the move happen, which seems to us like a reasonable deadline.
While the Drama Club’s new space in Great Falls School is less than ideal and may be smaller than the space they had, it’s still workable once the mess created by the move is sorted out.
The top priority now should be sorting out the mess so the show can go on. Perhaps Principal Miller would be interested in volunteering to help the students organize their new space.
