FRYEBURG – Neither York nor Fryeburg wanted to run the ball exclusively on Saturday, but the weather had other plans.

Driving rain for the better part of three quarters kept both quarterbacks grounded and forced 10 combined fumbles between the two teams.

But it was York that made the best adjustment to its running game, getting 105 yards and three touchdowns from Jacob Anair on the way to a 40-0 blowout win over the Raiders.

“The counter traps and the turn-outs, they were all there today,” said Anair. The line blocked well and it was so slippery that it was hard for people to get a good hold on me when I ran.”

For York coach Randy Small, the win is an important step for his program.

“In the last few years we have had a couple of times where we’ve been 2-0, and then Fryeburg beat us,” said Small. “This win was big. The kids were really intense and up for it.”

Neither team was planning to run the ball all day to start, but the weather dictated differently, which hurt the Raiders more than it did the Wildcats.

“We’re not a team that can run the ball successfully without a passing game working,” said Fryeburg coach Jim Thurston. “With the weather the way that it was, that hurt us.”

With the rain bouncing off of helmets and sending spectators scurrying under umbrellas throughout the first half, York held Fryeburg to just 42 yards of total offense, and allowed the Raiders just four first downs, one of which came on a 15-yard penalty called against the Wildcats.

“We had a few penalties that hurt us, and committed a few more turnovers than I would like to see, but in all I think we played well considering the conditions.”

In contrast to Fryeburg’s running woes, York pounded the ball all day, putting five players over 25-yard mark on the ground, including Anair (105), Erik Rostad (7 carries, 62 yards) and Stacy Bradburn (2 carries, 52 yards).

Patrick Tweedie led the Raiders with 32 yards on 16 carries.

Anair started the scoring for the Wildcats just five minutes into the game on a two-yard plunge, and Rostad scored on his first carry of the game, with 2:50 to go in the first quarter, to give York a 12-0 lead.

In the second, Rostad took advantage of a Christopher Knox interception and ran 10 yards for the third York score, and Anair notched his second of the game with an eight-yard run with 4:46 to go in the half.

In the second half, with both teams using primarily back-up players, York struck again for two more. In the third, Anair ran for his third and final touchdown with just 15 seconds left, and in the fourth Jonathan Jiminez dove five yards for the last York touchdown of the afternoon.
