NEWARK, N.J. – Junior Adam Chenault put back his own rebound in front of the net with just 22 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the University of Maine to a 3-2 win over Manhattan in men’s soccer action Sunday.

Kevin Forgett put the Black Bears (2-1-1) on the board first when he deflected a redirected shot off Manhattan goalkeeper Collin Leaver on a corner kick early into the game. Maine doubled its lead just over 10 minutes later when Cooper Friend picked up his second assist on a feed to Justin Stockford, who broke in alone and found the lower right corner.

The Jaspers (1-3-0) caught a break 12 minutes later, as a Maine defender inadvertently put the ball in his own net and left the Black Bears with a 2-1 halftime lead. Justin Schultz knotted up the score for the Jaspers with a shot just below the crossbar in the 63rd minute, which sent the match into overtime.



UMF 1, Thomas 0

FARMINGTON – Andy Knox booted the ball into the back of the net at the 49:35 mark to score the only goal of the contest as the University of Maine at Farmington bumped Thomas College 1-0 in men’s soccer action Sunday.

The Beavers controlled the pace of the game with 11 shots. Thomas College managed only three shots, two in the first half and a lone shot in the second.

Ryan Conrad made four saves in net for Thomas, while the Farmington defense prevented Seabren Reeves from seeing much action in the win.

UMFK 2, Lyndon State 1

FORT KENT – Alekhine Veloso scored a goal in the 89th minute to send the University of Maine at Fort Kent to a 2-1 win over Lyndon State in men’s soccer action Sunday.

The Bengals (2-2-1) began the scoring in the fifth minute of the game when Anthony Lamarr buried a rebound into the back of the net. The Hornets (2-3-1) tied the score five minutes later on a free kick goal by Robert Carey, set up by teammate John Hamilton.

Jake Toof made seven saves in net for Lyndon State, while Nick Thibodeau made 10 saves to earn the win for Fort Kent.

Women’s soccer

Simpson 9, Thomas 1

WATERVILLE – Ashley Curran scored a hat trick as Simpson College rolled over Thomas College 9-1 in women’s soccer action Sunday.

The Simpson (6-2) squad pounded the Terriers (0-5), outshooting them 44-3 in 90 minutes of play. Simpson tallied four goals before 14 minutes had clicked off the clock and relaxed the remainder of the first half.

Simpson tabulated another four goals in the first eight minutes of the second half before Karen Demers booted an unassisted goal for Thomas at the 55:00 mark. Curran kicked the final Simpson goal for good measure at the 83:00 mark.

Western Connecticut 5, USM 1

DANBURY, Conn. – Returning LEC scoring champion Nicole Corbin and junior reserve Katie Massicotte netted a pair of goals apiece to lead Western Connecticut State University to a 5-1 win over the University of Southern Maine in women’s soccer action Sunday.

The Huskies (2-2-2) scored first in the seventh minute on a goal by junior Eva Hanson, but it would be the Colonials (6-2) for the rest of the way.

Western Connecticut responded two minutes later with Corbin’s first of two goals. Freshman midfielder Casey Piccola served up her first collegiate goal in the closing minutes of the first half.

Lyndon 1, UMFK 0

FORT KENT – Darcy Leblanc scored the lone goal as Lyndon State defeated the University of Maine at Fort Kent, 1-0, in women’s soccer action Sunday.

Keeper Lindsay Maguire earned the shutout making five saves on 10 shots for the Hornets (3-1-1). Kara Jackson made 14 saves on 21 shots for the Bengals (1-4-0).

Maine 2, Marist 1

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Erin Corey nailed a goal midway through the second half to secure a University of Maine 2-1 win over Marist College in women’s soccer action Sunday.

The Black Bears (5-2-1) scored first with an unassisted goal from Marie-Andrea Canuel at 30:58 in the first half.

Marist (1-7) evened up the score when Deirdre Murray converted a relay from Kristina Anderson and Kristen Leonhard in the opening minutes of the second half.

St. Joe’s 4, UMFK 1

STANDISH – Morgan Meserve shored up the contest with a pair of second-half goals to lead St. Joseph’s to a 4-1 win over the University of Maine at Machias in women’s soccer action Sunday.

The Clippers (2-3) lit up the board first when Shelly Hayden redirected a relay from Cathy Wilson into the back of the net. Machias struggled the rest of the way.

The Monks (3-2) responded nine minutes later on a goal from Danielle Somma, and improved the score to 2-1 before the half on a goal from Shaina Howard.

Field hockey

Thomas 5, Castleton 0

CASTLETON, Vt. – Meredith Arute scored a dazzling four goals as Thomas College cruised to a 5-0 blanking of Castleton State in field hockey action Sunday

Arute had a pair of unassisted goals for the Terriers within the first 14 minutes of play. In the second half, Arute had a penalty kick, an assist on a Molly Tibbetts goal and another unassisted goal to round out the scoring

Goalie Emily Provencal had 11 saves for Castleton, while Jen Lane stopped seven for Thomas.

Plymouth State 5, Bates 4

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Sophomore Christina Farias and junior Lilly Silva scored two goals apiece to lead Plymouth State to a 5-4 victory over Bates College in field hockey action Sunday.

The Panthers (4-1) were leading 4-1 at the half, when Liz Greenwood, who had scored in the first stanza, tallied her second in an attempt to change the momentum.

Sophomore Carolyn King brought the Bobcats (1-2) to within a goal with 21 minutes remaining, but Panther Silva threw an obstacle in the Bobcats’ path to a come-from-behind win with her second goal of the contest. Freshman Caitlin Tamposi scored Bates’ final goal on an assist from Plymouth native Brooke Anable in the loss.

UMass 1, Maine 0

AMHERST, Mass. – Junior Patricia Borneao scored an unassisted goal with just 4:30 left in regulation to give the University of Massachusetts a 1-0 upset win over the University of Maine in field hockey action Sunday.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities in the first half. The Black Bears (6-3) had their only real scoring chance when Joanna Fernandes took a shot off a penalty corner which was blocked by a defender before Emily Dooling booted the rebound into the hands of the Minutewomen’s (1-6) goaltender.

Though Maine had several opportunities in the second half, UMass senior Christine Tocco made a few superb saves to hold on to the Minutewomen’s first win of the year.

Becker 9, St. Joe’s 2

LEICESTER, Mass. – Mariah Seames notched a hat trick as Becker College sailed to a 9-2 win over St. Joseph’s in field hockey action Sunday.

Sarah Kay and Katie Fortier scored a goal apiece for the Monks (0-4), sandwiched between between Becker’s fourth and fifth goals of the contest. Becker (2-2) led 3-1 at the half.

St. Joseph’s used a tandem of goalies as Kelsey Moody made six saves, Ilissa Vallee had three and Mandy Gosselin closed with a pair.

WNE 3, UMF2

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Cori Eggert scored the game-winner at 7:16 of the overtime frame as Western New England College tipped the University of Maine at Farmington, 3-2, in field hockey action Sunday.

The Beavers drew first blood with a conversion from Kristi Coehin to Mary Sinclair, and Kristy Veazie put Farmington back up by one before the intermission for a 2-1 lead.

With time running out, Eggert tied up the contest for WNEC on a feed from Audrey Kelton at the 1:04 mark to force overtime.
