DURHAM – Charles Gomes, 56, grandson of Charlie Gomes, famous boat builder of Phippsburg, died Sunday evening, Sept. 19, at his home in Durham at 134 Rabbit Road.
He was born in Bath, Nov. 7, 1947, the son of Trueman and Juanita Richardson Gomes. He was educated in local schools and on Nov. 21, 1970, he married the former Margaret (Jeanine) Rece.
He was employed for many years at Pineland in Pownal and later for Eastland Shoe, where he worked as a machinist. Among his interests were gardening, clamming and fishing.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanine, of Durham; one daughter, Juanita Gomes, of Durham; three sons, Charles and his wife, Tina Gomes, of San Diego, Calif., Owen and his fiancee, Joanna Turcotte, of Mechanic Falls and Chad Gomes, of Durham; four grandchildren; and was excited about his fifth on the way; three sisters, Madelene Pierce, of Sebasco, Belinda Gomes, of West Point and Carrie Gomes, of West Point; one brother, Eugene Gomes, of Brunswick.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Trueman and Dwayne Gomes.
