RUMFORD – The Oxford County Democrats held a marathon three-night county committee meeting stretching the length and breadth of Oxford County during the week of Aug. 23, attracting more than 100 Democrats.
The meeting was opened Tuesday evening in Porter, continued Wednesday in Norway and concluded with a potluck supper and meeting on Thursday in Rumford. County Chairwoman Cathy Newell and Treasurer Mike Broderick conducted the meetings, with representatives from the Kerry and Michaud campaigns attending all sessions.
Local hosts included Doug Bowen and Myra Bethel in Porter, Hilary Ware and Miriam Laster in Norway and Rep. John Patrick and Sen. Bruce Bryant in Rumford.
Campaign updates were presented by Tim Trafford of the Michaud campaign, Dan O’Connor of the Kerry campaign and local candidates or their representatives, including Sen. Bruce Bryant, Senate District 14; Marge Medd, Senate District 13; Rep. John Patrick, District 92; Linda Petrie, District 93; Tim Carter, District 91; Terry Hayes, District 94.
Also, Roy Gedat, House District 95; Marlee Turner, House District 97; Margaret Reimer, House District 98; Gordon Fuller, House District 99; Kathleen Dougherty, House District 100; County Commissioner Fred Kennard; George Driscoll, candidate for county commissioner; and Price Hutchins, register of probate.
Geoffrey Herman of the Maine Municipal Association was the guest speaker the final night. His topic was the impact of the Palesky Tax Cap, which is opposed by the Maine Municipal Association and more than 50 statewide associations.
Other business at the county committee meeting included planning for the fall campaign and reports from the field offices in Norway and Mexico. Offices in Buckfield, Bethel and Bridgton will open after Wednesday, Sept. 1.
