AUBURN – It was a scenario Sean Favreau had never found himself in before.

After stealing a pass from a defender, the converted fullback broke away in a tie game Monday.

“I’m used to trying to keep the ball out or kick it up the field,” said Favreau.

This time his intent was to score, not prevent one. So the senior raced in and fired a left-footed shot off the hands of the Skowhegan goaltender to lift the Edward Little boys’ soccer team to a 2-1 victory.

“That was actually the very first goal I’ve ever had – for my team,” said Favreau. “That was the very first goal I’ve ever scored.”

The goal broke a 1-1 tie and ended a strong second-half start for Skowhegan. The win lifted the Red Eddies to 4-2 overall.

“We lost 11 and didn’t make the playoffs and to be 4-2 is huge,” said EL coach Dave Morin, who had just two returning starters back this year.

After EL took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a Raynor Large goal, the Indians (2-3-1) made a strong push in the second half. Skowhegan tied it 8:50 into the half when Alex Ferretti dropped a pass for Dylan Wentworth. He cut through the middle for a point-blank shot in front.

“When they tied it, I’m saying, Oh boy,'” said Morin. “We’ve come back when other teams have scored goals this year, but last year when that happened it really bothered us a lot.”

Skowhegan couldn’t hold or capitalize on the momentum. With 24:03 left in the game, Favreau rushed a Skowhegan defender and blocked his clearing pass. Favreau rushed by him and was in alone.

“I tried to get it up there and went for the shot,” said Favreau.

The senior was a defender but moved to forward this year to get more playing time.

“We were passing better and moving the ball better and then they broke through on a slight mistake on the outside and the kid took advantage of it,” said Skowhegan coach Peter Vigue.

Skowhegan did have one last gasp of an opportunity. With EL caught up in the closing seconds of the game, a pass up the middle sprung Ryan Johnson in alone on EL keeper B.J. Levasseur with five seconds remaining.

Levasseur took away the angle, and Johnson’s shot went wide to the left.

“If they score on that, it’s devastating,” said Morin.

“It was a nice bid,” said Vigue. “It was good to have a shoot like that and have a chance. I didn’t think we’d be able to generate a shot because they’d had pretty good defense at the end and kept us to the outside.”

Levasseur made some key saves in the first half as well.

Large put EL ahead 9:34 into the game. His header was knocked down by a defender, but Large put back the loose ball.

Skowhegan tried to answer and had EL on its heels. Jonathan Jacques had a pair of shots in front knocked aside by a sprawling Levasseur.

“Especially after they scored, he came up with some big saves,” said Vigue. “We tried to respond, and he had some important saves.”
