BOSTON (AP) – Police shot a man after he allegedly sliced an officer in the leg with a machete as the officers responded to a call about a disturbance at an apartment.

Four officers were dispatched to the apartment on Princeton Street in the East Boston neighborhood Sunday night after receiving a report that two brothers were fighting, according to officer Michael McCarthy.

One of the brothers, Abel Benevides, appeared at the door of the apartment, brandishing a machete. Police said he swung the blade at them, cutting one of the officers in the knee.

Police said two of the officers fired at Benevides, and one shot struck him in the left side. Benevides, 40, remained hospitalized at Massachusetts General Hospital on Monday, undergoing surgery for a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The wounded officer was also treated at the hospital, and was expected to recover. His name was not immediately released.

Police said the shooting was under investigation by internal affairs personnel.
