BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) – A former Milton teacher accused of sexually assaulting an underaged student was sentenced Monday to serve six months in jail.

Jaime Lee Rugg, a former drama instructor and athletic director at Milton High School, had pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 15-year-old student four years ago.

The police affidavit said Rugg befriended the underaged girl shortly after she enrolled at Milton High School.

The girl, who had been placed with a foster family in Milton, told investigators that she told Rugg she had been sexually abused as a child and viewed him as a confidant.

The two subsequently had sex at the school and at his apartment numerous times, starting when she was 15, according to the affidavit. The legal age of consent in Vermont is 16.
