STRATTON – Two people were charged for drug trafficking Saturday after Maine State Police investigated a complaint about a residence in Stratton.

Four state troopers, a drug enforcement agent and a state forest ranger seized 78 pounds of marijuana, 35 grams of hashish and 23 grams of psilocybin mushrooms at the home of Justin Kuhni on Reservoir Road about 1:30 p.m., according to Lt. Dale Lancaster of the Maine State Police. The marijuana, dried, would fetch about $24,000 on the street, he said. He had no estimates for the value of the hashish or mushrooms.

A strong aroma of marijuana was emanating from the house when officers arrived on scene, he said, which prompted them to secure a search warrant.

Kuhni and his girlfriend, Courtney Steeves, were arrested and charged with unlawful trafficking of drugs. They were released later the same day on $1,000 cash bail. The case is scheduled to be heard in Franklin County District Court on Oct. 28.

State police also arrested 25-year-old Ryan Cowper the following day in Coplin Plantation, where a search of a residence there turned up one pound of marijuana. He was charged with furnishing Schedule D drugs and was released later Sunday on $300 cash bail. A court hearing for his case is scheduled for January.
