AUBURN – A Massachusetts woman was convicted Tuesday of trafficking crack cocaine after a two-day trial in Androscoggin County Superior Court.

A jury found Lucille “Pudgy” Calhoun, 37, of Mattapan, Mass., guilty of two counts of trafficking crack cocaine after the state presented evidence that she sold the drug to a confidential informant twice on Nov. 20, 2003.

Calhoun’s attorney argued that the state’s case was shaky because it was based on testimony from the confidential informant, a former drug addict who agreed to work with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency in order to avoid being charged herself.

“They want you to rely on a desperate woman to prove their case,” defense attorney Allan Lobozzo argued.

Assistant Attorney General David Fisher described the informant as a former addict who has turned her life around. He said her testimony was corroborated by the fact that drug agents found Calhoun in possession of the money that the agents gave to the informant to use in the transaction.

A Superior Court judge ordered Calhoun to remain in jail without bail until her sentencing. The length of her sentence will depend on whether the judge determines that the charges should be considered “aggravated” due to her prior criminal record. The judge is scheduled to make this determination Thursday. A charge of aggravated trafficking carries a minimum sentence of four years in prison.

Calhoun’s sister, Jacqueline “Peaches” Calhoun, also faces a charge of trafficking cocaine. She is scheduled to go to trial next month.

Police had been following both women as part of an investigation of crack dealing in the downtown area. Both women came to Lewiston from the Boston area. They were arrested May 19 after agents entered the Knox Street apartment where police say Lucille Calhoun was staying with her 2-year-old son.
