PORTLAND – A trio of singers called “under the song tree” will perform a benefit concert for Spurwink at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, at Portland High School.

These veteran Maine songwriters and singers are Anni Clark, Dan Merrill and Lynn Deeves, who joined together in 2000.

Within a year, they had recorded a CD, “under the song tree Live!”, in Portland at the First Parish Church.

It demonstrates their three-part harmonies and the acoustic guitars, flute, harmonica and percussive instruments that have become their trademark sound.

When not performing, Deeves has worked in the Spurwink residential programs for 14 years. “I’ve always wanted to do something musically that would benefit the kids served through Spurwink,” she says. “I’m thrilled that Anni and Dan were willing to join me in doing just that.”

Spurwink is a nonprofit agency that provides services for children, adolescents and adults who face behavioral, emotional and developmental challenges. These include community-based residential and day programs for youths and adults, outpatient services, and prevention and family-based services.

Deeves began performing on the New England club circuit with high energy, top-40 rock bands. Her voice has been described as “equal parts power and peace,” and she’s noted for her confident stage presence and wacky humor. Her two solo CDs, “Connecting the Dots” and “Soul Food,” are a mix of gospel, blues and “empowered folk.”

Clark, who grew up in Yarmouth, has been touring nationally, virtually nonstop since quitting her day job at L.L. Bean nearly 25 years ago. She will soon release her sixth solo recording, which was recorded live at Deertrees Theater in Harrison. She is a two-time finalist at the Kerrville Folk festival in Texas.

Merrill grew up in southern Maine. In 1995, he was honored as a “New Artist” win at the Kerrville Folk Festival. He soon released a CD of originals, “Revolution,” and has just released a CD with a funky, Philadelphia-based band, Simon Apple. Besides performing and writing, he records and produces projects for others in his home studio.

The concert will be in the Portland High School Auditorium, 286 Cumberland Ave. Tickets are $15 each and $30 for a family. They can be reserved by calling (207) 688-4573, ext.120, or by e-mailing [email protected]. Tickets will also be available at the door.
