On Sept. 13, the Sun Journal again showed its true colors with regard for freedom and individual rights in an editorial. The blatant misrepresentation of facts in that piece makes me acutely aware of the waste of time it would be to introduce the truth to the editor. The Sun Journal does not care, but perhaps I can appeal to the citizens instead.

The now defunct assault weapons ban was a political tool to help some anti-gun politicians acquire votes. The fact that it also equated law-abiding and hardworking American citizens with violent criminals makes no difference to them, but it should to you. A government that does not trust its citizens with weaponry and actively works to disarm them cannot itself be trusted.

The media, certain politicians and some law enforcement people would have you believe that without the protection of this enlightened legislation, blood will run red in the streets and the Gaza Strip will be peaceful in comparison. This is a pure lie. The ban did nothing to change the capabilities of the weapons, but just modified the cosmetics. Already we hear screams of “loophole.” Watch your backs, Americans! Be happy this ban expired, but be aware that it will reinvent itself as either state or federal legislation.

Also, do not expect Maine’s supposedly conservative senators to stand up for your rights. They were quoted in the same issue as supporting the federal ban, and would doubtless support similar state legislation.
