NORWAY – Mr. Ernest J. Dyer, 81, died Friday, Sept. 24, at Stephen’s Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was a resident of Whippoorwill Road in Rumford Point.

Born in Freedom, Maine on Aug. 4, 1923, he was the son of Rufus and Rena (Church) Dyer. He attended schools in Stratton.

He worked for Civil Service as an inspector, worked in the maintenance dept., and he also worked as a part-time police officer in Shirley, Mass. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, including the Battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge.

He was a well-known pilot in the area and he also owned and operated his own airport and taught flying lessons.

He was also a member of the D.A.V.

He was married in Rumford, on June 13, 1985, to Linda N. Butler, who survives of Rumford.

Other survivors include; two daughters; Ernestine Shemwell, of Madison, and Jane Dyer, of Temple; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Durrell, of Jay, and Guy Durrell, of Rangeley; two step-daughters, Debbie Colby, and her husband, Jim, of Limington, and Natalie Burnham, of Conway, N.H.; and two step-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by two brothers, Olion Dyer and Leslie Dyer.
