• The Lewiston and Auburn schools are closed in celebration of Fair week and in order to give the pupils an opportunity to see the Governor and in all probability more children will be in attendance today than yesterday which was announced as children’s day – there are truant officers, you know, and there are children who like to go to school – when it keeps.

• The mills will be closed all day for Governor’s day.

• A.K.P. Quimby of South Lewiston exhibited to The Sun a potato weighing 4½ pounds.

50 Years Ago, 1954

Public participation in Lewiston-Auburn during the 10-minute surprise air raid alert that sounded, the first such unannounced test to be held in Maine, was termed “from good to poor” by Civil Defense officials. Cooperation by citizens throughout Androscoggin County also was not up to that shown during previous alerts, said County CD Director Ralph B.Skinner. Lewiston CD Director Irving Friedman said the public response to the alarm might have been more gratifying had the city owned a proper alarm system. “Some people just didn’t know what it was all about.” Friedman declared. “There were a large number of calls at the fire stations, put in by citizens who thought there was a fire.”

25 Years Ago, 1979

• Two horses attempting to enter the Maine Turnpike from Auburn were shooed away by toll men and were last reported seen heading south on Washington Street, police said. Auburn police could not locate the hurried horses.

• In Lewiston, a moose was spotted running loose in the area of Hevey Street, off Webster Street, a citizen reported. Lewiston police could not locate the loose moose.

• The Auburn police snatched and disposed of a spider that was behind a woman’s refrigerator at her Barker Arms residence. The woman reported to police that she was frightened after sighting the spider drop behind the refrigerator.
