WOODSTOCK – SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy told directors Monday that four of the district’s five schools have scored within state and federal standards for yearly progress.

“I have received word from the Maine commissioner of education as to how our schools did on the (Maine Educational Assessments), and our three elementary schools and Telstar High School have shown adequate yearly progress. The middle school, however, did not meet state guidelines,” he said.

“As a result, the middle school is listed as a continuing improvement priority school where we need to address certain areas to improve students’ performance and monitor progress as we introduce new programs.”

Murphy said there are 29 categories considered in rating schools, and at Telstar Middle School there are issues with the school’s disabled students.

“We are already focusing on specific population students by adding a full-time administrator at the middle school in place of one administrator to handle both the middle and high school programs,” Murphy said.

“We also have added a hands-on instructional program to provide added assistance for students with special needs. What we are doing is aimed at assuring that this year’s report next spring will show the middle school is showing adequate yearly improvement, which is how schools are rated. We are also working on other plans to address the need to show adequate improvement throughout the coming school year,” he said.

The three elementary schools that received good grades are the Andover and Woodstock elementary schools and Crescent Park School in Bethel.

SAD 44 serves Andover, Bethel, Greenwood, Newry and Woodstock.

In other business, Murphy reminded the board that Oct. 6 and 7 have been set aside for the first set of parent/teacher conferences for the school year. The conferences will he held both evenings.

The board, after receiving a recommendation from the personnel committee, gave spare bus driver Patricia Springer full-time status on the Newry run.

The next board will be Oct. 12 at the Crescent Park School.
