GREENE – After several months of research and phone calls, the town has found a transmission for one of its older firetrucks.

Chief Bruce Tufts asked selectmen Monday for $3,900 from the Fire Department’s budget to buy a used but upgraded transmission from an out-of-state company.

The board approved his request, agreeing it would be cheaper than buying a new transmission for an estimated $25,000.

Selectman Maurice Levasseur said he believes this would solve the problem and not just “put a Band-Aid on it.”

The money will be taken from the repair funds.

One concern the board had was whether to spend the money before knowing the outcome of the Palesky tax-cap referendum. But members decided that if the town was going to keep the truck, it should be fixed.

The town is holding a meeting Oct. 24 on how the school will respond if the Palesky tax-cap referendum passes. Selectmen urge the public to attend, but stress it is not designed to be a debate. The session is from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Volunteer Fire Building on Patten Road.

Selectmen will hold a workshop session at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Town Office basement to explain the budget process and hear from the public.
