FARMINGTON – Rachel Ellis Dyke, 94, a former resident of Livermore Falls, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, at Orchard Park Rehabilitation and Living Center, where she had been a resident since May. She had been a resident of Orchard Park Assisted Living Center since 1994.
She was born Oct. 24, 1909, in Canton Point, the daughter of Charles R. and Alice Boshan Ellis. Her family moved to Sabattus in 1910, where Rachel attended school until they moved to Auburn. She was a 1926 graduate of Edward Little High School, and furthered her education at Bates College, receiving her B.A. degree in 1930. She taught Latin and French at Jay High School for six years, as well as coaching girls’ basketball.
On Dec. 26, 1934, she married Charles Newell Dyke, making their home in Livermore Falls until 1942, where she was a member of the Garden Club and Chaucer Club.
She and her husband moved to Augusta, where he was state director of municipal audit for the State of Maine Department of Audit. During World War II, she taught at Cony High School until 1947, and went back in 1961 to continue teaching until 1972.
Her husband passed away Sept. 28, 1978.
She was a member of the Maine Teachers Association, National Teachers Association and the Maine Retired Teachers Association. While living in Augusta she was a member of the Augusta Study Club and the Augusta Nature Club. She was a member of the Universalist Church, the Winchester Club and a life member of the Order of Eastern Star, Washburn Chapter.
She is survived by a son, C. Richard Dyke and his companion, Bertha Cosgrove, of Sidney; a daughter, Janice and her husband, Russell E. Dodge Jr., of New Sharon; two grandsons, Calvin Dyke, Charles “Rusty” Dyke; four granddaughters, Patricia Bernier, Jessica Buck, Jennah Godo, and Joanna Bagnulo; five great-grandsons, Calvin Dyke, Corey Dyke, Shane Bernier, and Matthew and Jared Buck; two great-granddaughters, Erin Dyke and Makayla Dyke; and one niece and one nephew.
