WESTBROOK – Dorothy J. Faunce, 82, a longtime resident of Depot Street, Alfred, died Sept. 29, at a Westbrook nursing home, after a brief illness.

She was born in Blanchard, June 1, 1922, a daughter of Percy H. and Olive (Taylor) York.

She attended Edward Little High School in Auburn.

She worked at the former South Portland Shipyard during World War II, and in 1947 moved to Alfred where she resided for many years.

Mrs. Faunce was a very energetic and opinionated woman who had a great love of children.

She ran a nursery school in her home, was a leader for the York County Extension and was involved with 4-H. She was also a trustee, assistant librarian and then longtime head librarian of the Parsons Memorial Library in Alfred. She had been active in the P.T.A. in Alfred.

Creative with her hands, she was an avid knitter and was recognized by Mercy Hospital in Portland for 4,000 volunteer hours knitting caps and blankets for the infants born there. She knit Christmas stockings and was able to restore fine antique needlepoint. She made drapes for Fran Dudgeon, some of which have been in the Bush home at Walker’s Point. Years ago, she had also worked for Leedy’s Restaurant.

She enjoyed participating in Republican politics in York County. In younger years, she was an avid walker, often walking 10 miles per day.

She was a former member of the Alfred Parish Church Ladies Auxiliary, and was a longtime member and past worthy matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Alfred.

She was an avid reader, and was a fan of the Boston Red Sox.

Survivors include three sons, Michael Faunce, and his wife, Betty, of Norway, James Faunce, and his wife, Lesley, of Waterboro, and Stephen Faunce, and his wife, Wendy, of Wells; three daughters, Mary Jutting, and her husband, Duane, of Scarborough, Sue Chevalier, and her husband, Pat, of Waterboro, and Lynn Loe, of Waterboro; two brothers, Roger York, and his wife, Martha, of Venice, Fla., and Dick York, and his wife, Nancy, of Farmington; a sister, Connie Beedy, and her husband, Dick, of Dixfield; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
