LEWISTON – A man was stabbed in the neck during an early-morning brawl at Rockin’ Robin’s on Lisbon Street today, and a series of fights spilled into the club parking lot.

Police from Lewiston and Auburn swarmed on the area at about 1 a.m. trying to control a crowd of more than 100 people.

The victim of the stabbing was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with a wound beneath his jaw. His name was not immediately known. Police said the man was conscious and able to speak with them as he was loaded into an ambulance.

Another man was taken to the police station as a possible suspect or witness to the attack, police said. A club security guard took a knife from the hand of one of the brawlers inside the club, but it remained unknown if it was the weapon used in the stabbing.

The first officers to arrive at the fight quickly called for backup from all available police units. Soon after, officers from Auburn began to arrive as several skirmishes broke out in the parking lot.

Clusters of people scattered across the lot, some of them getting into fights that did not appear to be related to the initial confrontation.

Paramedics who arrived in two ambulances tended to the stabbing victim while trying to care for others who suffered lesser injuries. Police said a young woman who fainted outside the club did not require medical attention.

It remained unclear what motivated the initial fight inside the club. One woman who had been in the bar at the time said she heard shouting, a scream and then a rush of people moved toward the door.

As police gained control of the mob in front of Rockin’ Robin’s, officers were sent to another brawl that began at a Mobil station a few hundred yards away. It was believed that fight was a spillover from the melee at the club.

Shortly after the fight at the Lisbon Street nightspot began, another brawl was reported at a bar on Sabattus Street across town, straining staffing on the third police shift. A Lewiston police car reportedly was involved in an accident at the second site; details were unavailable.

By 2 a.m., the victim of the stabbing was being treated at CMMC. Police Sgt. Kelly Hamel said he did not yet know the name or age of the man who was stabbed. The man appeared to be in his 20’s.

The stabbing took place less than a week before city leaders will discuss whether to pull a special-activity permit at Rockin’ Robin’s.

Police said the last straw was an Aug. 27 incident that ended with an officer being assaulted. Police had to respond to a near riot with drawn clubs and Mace, police said. The bar has had 106 calls for service in the past year.

After the injured man was taken to CMMC, security officials there reportedly called police to help calm a crowd that had gathered in a waiting room.
