I just finished reading the article in which Jim Bennett gives a rundown on the new taxes he would implement if the tax cap were to be voted in (Sept. 23). I was appalled, to say the least.
Mr. Bennett has known about the tax-cap referendum for a long time. He has used scare tactics and recently, threats of new taxes. At no time has he written anything stating ways the city could cut back to save money.
Actually, he recently asked for over $1 million. I can only imagine the tax hike we will be in for September 2005.
This, to me, shows that he has no concern or respect for the citizens who pay his salary. His past investments have been costly, but not fruitful. The flower gardens that have been planted in place of taxpaying tenements are very pretty but seem like very poor investments. The cost of buying the buildings, paying to tear them down and erecting these gardens must have been very costly. Not to mention losing important tax dollars from the landlords and business owners who lost their properties.
Lewiston can’t afford a big spender like Mr. Bennett. I don’t think he knows the definition of the word budget. Whether the tax cap passes in November or not, I think it’s time for the citizens to ask for a change. I don’t think we can afford Mr. Bennett for much longer.
