PORTLAND – Dorothy C. Thomas, 95, widow of George E. Thomas, of 335 Sawyer St., South Portland, died Thursday, Sept. 30, at the Barron Center, Portland, following a brief illness.
She was born Dec. 16, 1908 in South Paris, a daughter of Ernest Fairlie and Marianna Tebbetts Clason.
She moved to Gardiner in 1910, and then to Lisbon Falls and later to Lisbon. Mrs. Thomas attended Lisbon Falls schools, graduating from Lisbon Falls High School in 1926. She attended Bates College in Lewiston for two years and then transferred to Nasson College, Springvale, where she graduated with a business degree in 1930.
She worked in Lewiston in business office positions for a few years before marrying George E. Thomas in 1935 and moving to Portland.
From 1940-1960 she worked in the business office and retail sales jobs at Loring, Short and Harmon, W.T. Grant and Porteous, Mitchell and Braun.
She is survived by a daughter, Judith C. Merrill, of South Portland; a son-in-law, Charles H. Merrill, of South Portland; two grandchildren, Stephanie L. Merrill, of New York, N.Y., in whose arms she died, and Thomas F. Merrill, and his wife, Christine, of North Conway, N.H.; a brother, E. Freeman Clason, of Avondale, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, Priscilla V. Clason, of Avondale, Ariz., and Virginia M. Clason, of South Portland; and several nieces and nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews.
