Doom and gloom. It’s Chicken Little, “The sky is falling.” It will be the end of the world, scream the headlines and TV ads, if Question 1 passes. Well, I say, baloney.
The naysayers said the same things about Proposition 13 in California and Proposition 2 in Massachusetts and it didn’t happen. And it won’t happen here in Maine. What, then, is the problem?
It’s all about spending money. If there is money available in Augusta, the Legislature will spend it. For over 30 years, state spending has outpaced actual revenues, inflation and population growth. It must stop.
It’s about time the people of Maine who pay all the taxes take back control. Vote for the tax cap and force the Legislature to justify every program already on the books before they fund it. Don’t let scare tactics influence your vote on Nov. 2.
