BLACKSBURG, Va. – Brandon Pace kicked four field goals to atone for last week’s late miss, and Virginia Tech played superb defense to beat No. 6 West Virginia 19-13 Saturday, paying back the Mountaineers for an upset in 2003.

Vincent Fuller intercepted Rasheed Marshall’s pass with 18 seconds left to seal the victory for Virginia Tech (3-2), which held on after taking a 16-0 lead in the second half.

No. 2 Oklahoma 28, Texas Tech 13

NORMAN, Okla. – Jason White threw three touchdown passes to break Oklahoma’s career mark and Adrian Peterson added 146 rushing yards and a touchdown run Saturday, leading the No. 2 Sooners past Texas Tech 28-13.

White broke Josh Heupel’s record in the third quarter with his 54th career touchdown pass. Fullback J.D. Runnels caught White’s pass in the right flat and took it into the end zone to put Oklahoma ahead 21-6.

No. 3 Georgia 45, No. 13 LSU 16

ATHENS, Ga. – Georgia’s offense finally showed up – and there went LSU’s hopes of making another run at the national championship.

David Greene set a school record by throwing five touchdown passes and the third-ranked Bulldogs got a huge victory in the Southeastern Conference, shredding No. 13 LSU and its fearsome defense 45-16 on Saturday.

No. 4 Miami 27, Georgia Tech 3

ATLANTA – Brock Berlin threw three touchdown passes and Frank Gore rushed for 115 yards as No. 4 Miami beat Georgia Tech 27-3 Saturday in the Hurricanes’ first ACC road game.

Playing without P.J. Daniels, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading rusher, Georgia Tech was shut down by Miami’s tough defense, which forced four turnovers. Miami, fourth in the nation in scoring defense, has allowed only one offensive touchdown in four games.

No. 5 Texas 44, Baylor 14

AUSTIN, Texas – Cedric Benson ran for 188 yards and three touchdowns and Vince Young passed for two scores as No. 5 Texas cruised past Baylor 44-14 Saturday.

Benson passed Earl Campbell for second place on the school career rushing list and Young threw his first scoring passes to a wide receiver, both going to Tony Jeffery in the first half.

No. 9 Florida St. 38, North Carolina 16

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Wyatt Sexton threw three touchdown passes in his starting debut and Leon Washington ran for 153 yards and a touchdown as No. 9 Florida State defeated North Carolina 38-16 Saturday.

Florida State (3-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) built a 24-6 lead early in the third quarter, but didn’t put the game out of reach until Sexton’s 15-yard TD pass to Chauncey Stovall completed the scoring with 6:53 left.

No. 10 California 49, Oregon State 7

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A long layoff didn’t slow No. 10 California.

The Golden Bears (3-0, 1-0 Pac-10) jumped out to a 28-7 lead over Oregon State before halftime and never let up in a 49-7 rout of the Beavers (1-4, 0-2) on Saturday.

No. 14 Utah 28, New Mexico 7

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Quarterback Alex Smith ran for two touchdowns and Steve Savoy caught 11 passes for 150 yards in Utah’s 28-7 victory over New Mexico on Friday night.

The 14th-ranked Utes (5-0, 2-0 Mountain West Conference) have won nine straight dating to last season and are off to their best start since 1994.

New Mexico (2-3, 0-1) beat Utah 47-35 last year – the Utes’ last loss – but this time the Lobos were shut down by Utah’s quick defense.

No. 15 Purdue 41, Notre Dame 16

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Kyle Orton found a way to win at Notre Dame, ending a 30-year drought for Purdue.

Orton threw four touchdown passes, including a 97 yarder to Taylor Stubblefield, and Jerome Brooks returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown to give the 15th-ranked Boilermakers a 41-16 victory Saturday.

No. 16 Florida 45, Arkansas 30

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Chris Leak threw for a career-high 322 yards and three touchdowns, and No. 16 Florida held off another late rally to beat Arkansas 45-30 Saturday.

The Gators extended their winning streak against the Razorbacks to five games – every matchup since Arkansas joined the Southeastern Conference in 1992.

No. 19 Michigan 35, Indiana 14

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Michigan’s Chad Henne needed one half to warm up Saturday. Then he spent the third quarter picking apart Indiana’s defense.

Henne threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, and Leon Hart returned a punt 76 yards for a score to help the No. 19 Wolverines rout Indiana 35-14.

No. 20 Wisconsin 24, Illinois 7

MADISON, Wis. – Tailback Anthony Davis’ return from an eye injury sparked No. 20 Wisconsin’s stagnant offense and the Badgers’ defense was as stout as ever in a 24-7 victory over Illinois on Saturday.

Davis rushed 27 times for 213 yards and three touchdowns in his first action in a month and the Badgers (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) held their fifth straight opponent to a touchdown or less, a feat they last achieved in 1951.

No. 22 Louisville 59, East Carolina 7

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Eric Shelton ran for 129 yards and tied a Louisville record with five touchdowns on the ground Saturday to lead the No. 22 Cardinals to a 59-7 win over East Carolina.

Louisville (4-0, 2-0 Conference USA) piled up 549 yards overall on the nation’s second-worst defense and reached 40 points for the seventh time in 17 games under second-year coach Bobby Petrino.

No. 25 Oklahoma St. 36, Iowa State 7

STILLWATER, Okla. – Vernand Morency rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns and Jason Ricks kicked three field goals to lead No. 25 Oklahoma State past Iowa State 36-7 Saturday.

The Cowboys, plus-13 in turnover margin this season, forced four Cyclones fumbles and used stingy defense to set up short scoring drives as they improved to 4-0 for the first time since 1997.
