I would like to add my two cents to the severe motor vehicle operation problem we have in Lewiston-Auburn. Having been a professional truck driver for the better part of 20 years, I feel qualified to make these observations.

I use the term motor vehicle operator as opposed to driver for a reason. You can teach a monkey to operate a car. You can’t teach a monkey to drive a car.

In Lewiston-Auburn, we have two types of drivers: those who drive, obeying the rules, and those who get into their cars and steer it to their destination.

Recently, I made the mistake of stopping for a pedestrian in front of Bates College. She wasn’t in a crosswalk, so I waved her across. The young man on the motorcycle behind me must have been very impressed. After crossing Russell Street, he pulled up beside me (in front of the elementary school) and indicated that I was No. 1. He evidently had some medical condition that prevented him from using his other four fingers. Something else you can teach a monkey to do.
