CASCO – AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps volunteers hope to add a few rays of sunshine to the children with life threatening illnesses and their families at Camp Sunshine. The team arrived Sept. 2 and will be onsite until Nov. 5.
Along with being involved with the families and camp programs, the squad is preparing the camp for winter by disassembling docks, playground equipment and tents, and re-constructing the camp’s ice skating rink for winter sessions.
The 10-person troupe will be involved with the camp’s fund-raiser and community event, the second annual Camp Sunshine Pumpkin Festival, by helping to carve their way into history with the most carved pumpkins in one place at one time.
Corps members, all aged 18 to 24, must complete 1,700 hours of service during their 10-month term. In exchange, members receive an education award, which can be applied to educational loans or future costs associated with secondary education.
AmeriCorps is directed by the Corp. for National and Community Service. Interested applicants are encouraged to apply. Many programs have no upper age limit. For more information, visit www.americorps.org or call 800-942-2677.
