RUMFORD – Residents have a chance on Tuesday to decide whether to accept the former Abbott Farm Plaza and nearly 79 acres from Druker Corp. of Boston and Ronrum Realty LLC.

A special town meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the Mountain Valley High School auditorium.

The plaza is three miles west of town along Route 2 and was home to Ames department store, a supermarket and several smaller businesses. The last tenant moved out in September.

The Board of Selectmen has recommended acceptance of the property, and the town’s Finance Committee supports a board plan to spend up to $100,000 from undesignated funds to maintain and repair the buildings at the site.

Not included in the deal is the Sweetser farm on the west side of the front of the complex.

The building complex and land is assessed at just over $2.5 million and pays about $48,000 annually in property taxes.

Town Manager Robert Welch has said that a major part of the building complex’s roof requires repair. The rest of the $100,000 requested will pay for electricity, water, plowing and heating oil for one year.

A third article on the warrant asks for authorization to allow selectmen to sell or develop the property without a subsequent town vote, providing they approve accepting the land and appropriating the funding for repairs at Tuesday’s town meeting.

Selectmen decided last month to ask residents for ideas they may have for the center’s use, although board Chairman Jim Thibodeau has said he doesn’t want it to go under nonprofit ownership.

One Rumford resident has suggested turning the shopping center into a recreational complex, while a real estate agent has said that he knows of investors who may be interested in the property.

Selectmen have asked residents to submit ideas to the town office prior to the board’s next regular meeting on Oct. 7.
