AUBURN – A Laurel Avenue man was behind bars Tuesday night charged with assaulting and forcibly detaining his girlfriend the night before.

Carl Harrington, 21, of 29 Laurel Ave., was arrested on charges of kidnapping, assault, refusal to submit to arrest and two counts of criminal threatening.

Police were called to Harrington’s apartment about 10 p.m. Monday when a neighbor heard screaming. When officers arrived, they found Harrington and the woman there.

“It was revealed she had been threatened and assaulted,” said Auburn police Sgt. Scott Watkins. “When she attempted to leave, he physically restrained her.” Harrington continued to attack the woman once she was restrained, police said.

Police who responded to the apartment spoke with both Harrington and the woman and found probable cause to charge Harrington with kidnapping and other crimes. Watkins said Harrington struggled with the officers as they tried to take him into custody. That led to the additional charge of refusal to submit.

Harrington was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail, where bail was set at $15,000. That bail was lowered to $1,000 Tuesday after Harrington made a court appearance. He remained at the jail Tuesday night.
