FRYEBURG – Spectacular weather Monday helped propel the Fryeburg Fair to its first attendance record of the week.
After counting receipts Tuesday morning, ticket superintendent Barry Emery reported that Monday’s gate of 26,017 broke the record of 25,207 set in 2000. The popular Saco Valley Woodsmen’s Field Day attracted thousands of fair-goers.
Daily attendance figures do not include children under 12, seniors on Tuesday, advance sales, pass holders and life memberships.
Emery, who is in his 30th year as head of the ticket department, was optimistic about Tuesday, Senior Citizens Day.
“We’re working on our second record day today,” Emery said, noting “we just missed having a record Tuesday last year by 300 people.” About 15,000 seniors attend free on Tuesdays each year.
The record year’s daily paid attendance came in 2001 at 189,235.
