FRYEBURG – Fryeburg Fair crowned its first women’s champion Monday and saw five records broken at the 37th Saco Valley Woodsmen’s Field Day.

Nancy Zalewski of Plymouth, Wis., chopped and sawed her way past 17 other competitors to claim the title while breaking her own record in the Women’s Underhand Chop.

Gaston Duperre of Chicoutimi, Quebec, won champion woodsman honors, while Charlie Wojtkun of Preston, Conn., won the masters championship. Arnold Winn of West Newfield won champion trucker and John Wescott of Hollis won the champion logger title.

Records were broken in the log roll, open chain saw, women’s underhand chop, log loading and cable skidder. Fifty men entered the annual event along with 20 masters (55 and over) and 18 women. Ten of the competitors came from Maine, as well as from New Hampshire and Connecticut. Thirteen came from Vermont, 11 from New York, two from Minnesota and one from Washington state. Sixteen came from Canada.

Breaking records were Nancy Zalewski, women’s underhand chop, 38.34 seconds; Gaston Duperre, open chain saw, 4.77 seconds; Terry and Herb Gingras of Milan and Dover, N.H., log roll, 12.655 seconds; Bruce Cox, cable skidder, 1:06.08; and Arnold Winn, log loading, 2:11.06.
