For some people the word “trapper” brings to mind images of a rugged, bearded outdoorsman who easily lifts his living from the wilds of Maine. For others, “trappers” are an inhuman breed of men who grossly mutilate animals by snaring them in huge, steel traps. According to a Lewiston trapper, Jim Roy, both the images and the methods are misrepresented. Roy is president of the newly formed South Central Chapter of the Maine Trapper’s Association.

He’s been trapping for 17 years since he was 12 years old. “There are about 75 to 100 trappers within a 10-mile radius of Lewiston,” he says, “which is the highest concentration of trappers in the state. But we also (produce) the most fur in the state per square mile.”
