The Central Maine Shockers have been a part of the New England Football League for two years. Both years, they’ve posted impressive records worthy of home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
So what more could the Shockers want? Well, how about a league championship, and maybe even an unblemished record, while they’re at it.
“When we all got together, that was one of the goals. We wanted to have an undefeated season,” said team co-owner/defensive back Zach Stewart.
The 8-0 Shockers host the 4-5 Penobscot Seadragons at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lewiston Athletic Park in the NEFL semifinals. With a victory, Central Maine would host the winner of the Hampton-Mid-Coast semifinal in next week’s league championship.
Central Maine and Penobscot, out of Hampden, Maine, have already met twice this season, with the Shockers pulling off wins of 27-7 and 38-19. Stewart said his team won’t be taking a third win for granted.
“This is going to be the third time that we play them, but they’ve been building and building and building,” Stewart said.
“They have an incredible defense.”
That defense will be charged with stopping the most potent offense in the NEFL. Led by running back Marvin Langley, who has run for touchdowns in six of the Shockers’ eight games, and QB Steve Coleman (18 TDs, four INTs this season), the Shockers scored 276 points, just 13 points short of the league record.
Lest anyone think the Shockers are strictly a run-and-gun outfit, their defense made a name for itself this year, too, yielding just 83 points, second fewest in the league. The run defense, led by linebacker Mark Pettengill, was particularly stingy.
The defense as a whole proved quite opportunistic, scoring six defensive touchdowns, led by Matt Langley, who returned an interception and a fumble for touchdowns against Penobscot.
Tickets for Saturday’s game are $5. As has been the case for all home games, the Shockers will allow free admission to anyone who plays football at any level wearing their football jersey to the game.
