Lewiston’s well known weather prophet, general distributor and advertising agent Samuel Porter Morrill, has submitted to The Sun, his annual report of thunder storms during the past season. As a successful weather prophet, Mr. Morrill stands at the fore of New England prognosticators. He bases his predictions on scientific knowledge derived from a careful study of the planets, their relative positions and appearance from time to time. It is not guess work with Mr. Morrill, but a scientific application of his astronomic ideas. While not infallible, it is safe to say that nine out of ten of his predictions fall true.

50 Years Ago, 1954

Members of the Oriental Band of Kora Temple Shrine, Lewiston, marched up Main Street, Lewiston, yesterday afternoon on their way to the temple on Sabattus Street. After the march from South Goff and Court streets to the temple, the group participated in the annual Summer ceremonial.

“During the past 15 years, endowments to Shriners’ crippled children’s hospitals in North America have increased from $16,000,000 to more than $100,000,000 and membership in the Shrine has increased from 300,000 to more than 800,000.” declared Imperial Potentate Frank S. Land of Ararat Temple Kansas City, Mo.

25 Years Ago, 1979

Leeds – In all his almost 82 years, Arthur Sanders has seen his farm worked by horse-drawn plow and hand scythe to the mechanized monsters his son Bill operates today – doing the work of 20 men and still home in time for supper. Sanders has seen it all develop and yet he still marvels at what Bill can accomplish in a day. He remembers what he was able to do in the days when he was farming it himself from before daylight until after dark.
