WILTON – A 10-year-old boy was bitten several times by a dog Thursday afternoon in the Village View Street and Kent Drive area. The owner was summoned for having a dog at large.

The boy was riding his bike and apparently saw two girls run inside to get away from a dog, interim police Chief Ed Leahy said. The boy started to ride his bike faster to get away, too.

The chocolate Labrador retriever and pit bull mix started chasing the boy, Leahy said.

The child eventually dumped his bike and hit his head, which was protected by a helmet, Leahy said.

The boy got up and started to run, but the dog caught up to him, he said.

The dog had snapped its collar and broken away from its run at its Village View Street residence, Leahy said.

By the time the boy’s mother arrived, the chief said, the dog had started to drag the child off.

The boy had wound marks on both ankles and left arm when Leahy reached the scene, he said.

The boy was treated at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington and released, Leahy said.

Doctors said the wounds were not deep, but the skin was broken, he said.

The dog’s owner, Paul Dehetre, was charged with having a dog at large, Leahy said.

According to the chief, there has never been a previous problem with the dog, which had been known to play well with children.

The dog will be quarantined for 10 days inside the house and only allowed to be walked, on a leash, by its owner, Leahy said.

The dog was current on its rabies shots, Leahy said.
