LEWISTON – When the Lewiston boys’ soccer team had a goal waved off early in the second half, Blue Devil coach Mike McGraw calmly shrugged it off.

Instead of finding out why the goal was disallowed, he simply told his team to go out and get another one.

It may have taken awhile longer, but the way Lewiston’s defense was playing, the Blue Devils could afford to wait.

Subsequently, Nate Farnsworth broke the 0-0 tie and Adam Wilding added an insurance tally for a 2-0 win over Cony on Friday night.

“I give my kids credit,” said McGraw. “They kept working and working until we got the break we needed.”

The win should bolster the Blue Devils standing in the Eastern A Heal Points. Lewiston (9-2-1) was ranked seventh, one spot behind Cony (9-3) in sixth.

“We may switch spots, but it’s hard to say without playing EL and without playing Lawrence and whatever else goes on,” said McGraw.

Lewiston dominated much of Friday’s matchup, outshooting Cony 15-4. The Blue Devils defense was stalwart in front of keeper Brian Nason. Cony’s only real threat came off a Jake Barnes direct kick that was saved by Nason midway through the second half.

“Matt (Cyr), Nick (Bonenfant) and Tony Travaglini did a tremendous job out there covering for each other because they had tough assignments,” said McGraw. “Jake (Theriault) did a good job too as a stopper and defender because he had to make sure when he went up that he got back.”

Lewiston was so solid defensively, the Blue Devils offense was able to bide its time.

“If they had scored first, it might have been a different story but our defense stayed strong so we could score first,” said Farnsworth. “The good defense allowed us to be patient and wait for a goal. We were pretty confident we were going to score eventually.”

The break came with 17:23 left in regulation. Matt Manley’s pass from the midfield sprung Farnsworth up front. Farnsworth burst down the left wing, by the sweeper and beat Cony keeper Matt Dennett.

“To tell you the truth, I was getting kind of lazy and kind of hanging out right along their last line trying to get a chance,” said Farnsworth. “When we cleared it, Manley got it and played me a great ball. I was one-on-one with the sweeper and that what I was trying to do.”

The goal forced Cony to open things up a bit. Lewiston’s ball possession only got better, and the Blue Devils made it 2-0 with 3:40 left. Off a throw-in, Dave LaBonte’s cross was redirected in front by Wilding.

“When you’re down a goal, you have to find a way to equalize it,” said McGraw. “We found a small crack and got the insurance goal.”
