ORONO (AP) – In an early season matchup of two of the top five college hockey teams in the country, it took a penalty shot by Drew Stafford at 2:02 of overtime to lead No. 5 North Dakota to a 4-3 win against No. 2 Maine on Friday.

Maine’s Derek Damon scored his second goal of the game at 15:47 of the third period to force the extra session.

Rory McMahon put the Fighting Sioux (1-0) on top early with a goal 1:42 into the game. Damon answered on a 5-on-3 situation at 10:07 of the first period.

Maine’s Josh Soares scored a goal in the second, but North Dakota got two goals in the period, one from Andy Scheider, the other from Brady Murray, to take a 3-2 lead into the third.

North Dakota goaltender Jordan Parise made 22 saves to preserve the win. Maine goaltender Jimmy Howard stopped 20 shots.
