INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Ian Crocker didn’t need any generosity from Michael Phelps this time.

Crocker set a world record in the 50-meter butterfly at the Short Course World Championships on Sunday night, earning his second gold medal in the 25-meter temporary pool.

He touched first in 22.71 seconds, lowering the old mark of 22.74 set by Geoff Huegill of Australia at the 2002 championships in Berlin.

Brooke Hanson of Australia won her fourth and fifth gold medals of the meet with victories in the 100 breaststroke and 200 individual medley, surpassing American Kaitlin Sandeno’s four golds.

Crocker turned and checked the scoreboard, then raised both arms, acknowledging the cheers of 8,421 fans at Conseco Fieldhouse. A female fan held up a hand-lettered sign reading “There’s a croc in the water.”

“I was under water so long, I really couldn’t hear the crowd,” he said. “I botched up the turn a little bit. There are always things you can work on. No race is perfect.”

Crocker won a gold medal at the Athens Olympics after Phelps gave up his spot in the 400-meter medley relay final so Crocker could make up for a poor swim in an earlier race. Crocker swam the fly leg and helped the Americans to a world record. Phelps shared the gold, too, after swimming in the preliminaries.

Phelps won the 200 free at this meet before withdrawing Friday because of a back injury.

Crocker dropped out of the 100 fly preliminaries Sunday morning to conserve energy for the record he wanted to set in the evening. The effort was worth $15,000 from FINA, the sport’s international governing body.

“I really wanted to walk away from this meet with a world record,” he said. “I knew and the coaches knew there was a chance for the world record, so why not go get it?”

Crocker, a 22-year-old from Portland won the 100 fly Friday.

Mark Foster of Britain, who at 34 was at least six years older than the rest of the field, earned silver in 23.22. Duje Draganja of Croatia took bronze in 23.26. Matt Welsh of Australia, who finished second, was disqualified for staying under water too long on the start.

Crocker’s mark was the second world record of the meet. Australia won the women’s 400 medley relay in world time Saturday.

Hanson defeated teammate Jade Edmistone to win the 100 breaststroke in a meet record of 1:05.36. The Aussie duo also finished 1-2 in the 50 breaststroke.

U.S. Olympians Tara Kirk and Amanda Beard were third and fourth, respectively.

Hanson returned 11/2 hours later to win the 200 IM in 2:09.81. Lara Carroll of Australia took silver in 2:10.58. Katie Hoff, a 15-year-old Olympian from Baltimore, was third in 2:10.61. American Amanda Beard was fourth.

Thomas Rupprath of Germany added the 50 backstroke title to his victory in the 100 back. Rupprath touched first in 23.51. Matt Welsh of Australia, runner-up in the 100 back, was second in 23.60. Peter Marshall of Atlanta earned bronze in 23.93. Aaron Peirsol, the 100 back champion, was fourth.
