OXFORD – Donald W. Whittemore Sr., 83, of Oxford, died Friday, at his home.

He was born in Norway, June 2, 1921, the son of Charles J. and Erna C. Payne.

He attended Norway schools and had worked as a factory worker, carpenter, and in area shoe shops. For several years he was a millwright at A.L. Stewart Co. “Don” also worked for Howard Sanborn, training his harness racing horses.

He faithfully served his country in the Army, 103rd infantry during World War II. He received many medals, including the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, American Defense Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign, World War II Victory Medal and the Phillipine Liberation Ribbon.

Don was a member of the Floyd-Harlow VFW Post No. 9787, United States Trotting Associaton, and the Maine State Harness Association.

He loved horse and traveling to race tracks. He was also an avid hunter and card-player.

He married Carla McKay on Jan. 5, 1946. She died April 7, 1998.

He will be missed by his family and friends.

Survivors include his son, Donald Jr. and his wife, Joyce, of Lisbon; a daughter, Carmen Whittemore and her partner, Dana Bonney, of Oxford; three brothers and their wives, Kenneth and Louise, of South Paris, Willis and Yvonne, of South Paris, and Vernon and Barbara, of Oxford; a sister, Virginia and her husband, Henry Jones, of Daytona Beach, Fla.; four grandchilden, Chris, of Arizona, Pamela Kimball, of Otisfield, Dart Robinson, of Lisbon, and Shasta Whittemore, of Oxford; four great-grandchildren, Amanda Whittemore and Chris Jr., of Arizona, Jennifer Kimball, of Otisfield, and Reese Robinson, of Bowdoinham.
