With interest, I have read the Kalle Oakes’ column, a Sun Journal article and letters to the editor regarding the Edward Little High School Drama Club situation. It’s another decision made by the administration of the city of Auburn without thought or regard of its citizens.
As a member of the Auburn Community Band, I can understand how the Drama Club and its leaders must be struggling with a less-than-amiable city leadership.
Approximately three years ago, the band was having problems with scheduling of its rehearsal space. It became so intolerable that we began searching for a better location. At that time, the city manager, and since then, two former mayors, were asked if the city could help in finding space for the band to hold its rehearsals. Each affirmed there would be some space in the city inventory of buildings that could be made available to the band. Three years have passed and the band has not heard from the city regarding any type of space.
The band finally did find a very nice space for rehearsals. However, we do have to pay rent. To pay this expense, we have to beg for donations from the audience attending our weekly summer outdoor concerts, and yet we advertise a free concert. Thanks to the Recreation Department for their help and for the local companies who pay for our new music, the sound system company and the radio station advertising. I hope things work out better for the drama club.
