GREENWOOD – Voters will be asked to consider the recall of Selectman Ivan Roberts at a special town meeting Thursday.

Officials at the Greenwood Town Office think a relatively small group of citizens will attend.

“I’m not expecting a lot (of people),” Deputy Clerk Angela Lovejoy said Friday. “Maybe 30 or 40 or so – I’m not sure.”

The meeting will be straightforward, Lovejoy said. One warrant article will be presented to the voters. According to a copy of the warrant supplied by Lovejoy, the article asks, “Shall the Town vote to recall Ivan Roberts, Selectman and Assessor of the Town of Greenwood?”

Voting will be conducted by written ballot.

According to the town’s recall ordinance, which was adopted by the voters in March, residents may petition for the recall of elected municipal officers.

The Greenwood Board of Selectmen on Sept. 7 officially accepted a petition signed by 65 registered voters. It requested the town meet to consider the recall of Roberts.

The petition met the requirement that it be signed by 10 percent of the number of voters who cast ballots in the last gubernatorial election.

Roberts decided not to resign from the board, saying he had no intention of quitting. He has also pointed out that no formal charges of wrongdoing were brought against him.

While at least one citizen has expressed concern that Roberts be given formal charges and an opportunity to defend himself, Lovejoy said the town meeting will serve that function.

“This will be the fair hearing,” she said, noting that residents will be able to speak and ask questions before voting

Roberts could not be reached for comment Friday.
