ELLSWORTH, Maine (AP) – A 50-year-old Franklin man has died of injuries following a beating last month outside a home in Ellsworth.

Daniel Evans Wallace, who was in a coma following the Sept. 20 attack, died last weekend in Eastern Maine Medical Center.

Wallace’s alleged assailant, Jack Wentworth, 18, of Township 8, remained free on bail. Wentworth, the boyfriend of Wallace’s daughter, allegedly knocked Wallace to the ground and kicked him in the head.

The assault occurred after Wallace’s daughter and Wentworth had argued about a cell phone and Wallace tried to calm Wentworth down, Ellsworth police said.

Hours after his release on bail, Wentworth was assaulted outside his home. Police said the alleged assailant, Travis Battis, 23, of Hancock, apparently was retaliating for the attack on Wallace. Battis was charged with assault.

Maine State Police had been working on the case with Ellsworth police, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.

The attorney general’s office will decide whether to upgrade the charge against Wentworth in light of Wallace’s death, McCausland said.
