RUMFORD – The SAD 43 board will be updated on the progress made to meet requirements of the No Child Left Behind federal mandate and receive further information on proposals to potentially reconfigure the district’s three elementary schools.

The regular twice-monthly board meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the library of Mountain Valley High School.

Superintendent Jim Hodgkin was directed at the last meeting to bring additional information to the board about the pros and cons of placing all pupils from kindergarten through grade 5 in Rumford and Meroby elementary schools. This would result in the closing of Virginia Elementary School, although it could be used for other district purposes.

He said the board will decide whether to set up an ad hoc committee of administrators, board members and parents to further research the possible reconfiguration. Each of the three schools now house pupils in kindergarten through grade 5.

Curriculum Coordinator Gloria Jenkins is expected to discuss the No Child Left Behind progress report. Hodgkin said the district’s elementary schools currently meet the federal requirements, while the middle and high schools do not. He said a district action plan will be developed to meet the federal requirements.

Also on the agenda are proposals to create a department head of special education at the high school and to pay a stipend for that position, as well as payment of a stipend to the Kids on the Block adviser.

Several appointments will be made, as well as reports by district administrators and committees.
