UNITY – The fourth annual Great Maine Apple Day will include a pie contest, cider pressing and wine tasting.

It will be 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners’ Association’s Common Ground exhibition hall.

Events will include a Great Maine Two-Crusted Apple Pie Contest, a Kids’ Apple Dessert Contest (any dessert made with Maine apples and entered by 10:30 a.m.) and tastings of Maine apple varieties, including heirloom apples and new varieties, such as Honey Crisp.

People also will be able to take unknown apples to the event to be identified by experts. Children will be able to press their own cider using a hand crank, or they can watch a motorized cider press.

The day is sponsored by the Maine Pomological Society, with support from the state Department of Agriculture, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension, the Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and Fedco Trees.

For general information, people can call the farmers and gardeners association at 568-4142 or visit www.getrealmaine.com/visit/great_maine_apple_day.html.

Admission is $2 for association and Maine Pomological Society members and $4 for the general public. Children under 12 will be admitted free.
