Ken Plourde of Lisbon Falls is a winner. A big winner.
His prize: $4.2 million, paid out at a rate of $168,000 annually for the next 25 years.
Or, he could choose to take the winnings in a lump sum payment of $2,548,849.50
That’s the payout for last week’s Megabucks drawing. Plourde held the winning ticket, according to State Lottery Commission officials in Augusta.
He didn’t immediately return a call seeking comment.
Lottery officials said Plourde filed his claim with the commission last Thursday, the day after his quick pick number was drawn. The same officials said Plourde has 60 days to decide if he’ll take the winnings in a single check or have it doled out for the next quarter-century.
Folks at the Kitty Korner, the convenience store where Plourde bought his winning ticket, have already received their share of the jackpot: $30,000. But more important, they had the satisfaction of knowing a regular customer won big.
“He and his wife come in quite a bit,” said Tina Buiniskas, who owns the store with her husband, Neal. “That makes us very happy. I’m sure they can use the money.”
Buiniskas said she has not talked with Plourde since he won the jackpot.
Stores that sell jackpot winners get a piece of the action, said lottery officials, up to 1 percent of the total payout with a $30,000 cap.
The largest Tri-State Megabucks payout ever came on Jan. 25, 1992, when two winning tickets shared a $16.4 million pot. One ticket holder was from Maine, the other from Vermont.
A Mainer also won the second-largest jackpot, $9.16 million in the July 1, 1992, drawing. That person didn’t have to split the dough.
Rich Sperlazzi, the lottery commission’s marketing manager, said sales of Megabucks tickets continue to be strong, even after the launch of Powerball in Maine in July. He said Megabucks, which is run by the states of Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont, saw about an 11 percent decline in sales in Maine when Powerball began in the state.
That game, sold in 26 states, generally features much larger grand prizes as jackpots. Saturday’s Powerball drawing, which was worth $214.7 million, was claimed by 33 co-workers who purchased the winning ticket in Delaware.
