ORONO – Brent Shepheard scored a goal and registered an assist to lead Maine over Niagara 4-3 Friday night in a non-conference hockey contest.
Niagara pulled to within one goal halfway through the third period on scores by Barret Ehgoetz, who netted two in the game, and Aaron Clarke.
But Maine withstood a feverish attack in the final minute to gain the win, improving to 2-2-0.
Maine opened the scoring with a buzzer-beating goal in the first period when Michel Leveille deflected in a Jeff Mushaluk shot.
Maine added three more goals – by Derek Damon, Shepheard, and Greg Moore – in the second period.

ORONO – Erin Corey converted a pass from Heather Hathorn (2 assists) four minutes into the first half for the only goal the University of Maine would need as they cruised to a 5-0 win over Hartford in field hockey play Friday afternoon.
The Black Bears (9-4-1) outshot the Hawks (3-8-2) 23-3 with Hathorn, Marie-Andree Canuel, and Laurie Harper (2 goals) also adding a goal in the lopsided win.
Tanya Adoeno recorded the win in net without havng to make a save.
