MOSCOW (AP) – Venus Williams was upset by unseeded Elena Bovina 6-3, 6-2, in a Kremlin Cup quarterfinal Friday that lasted little more than an hour.
Williams, playing her first tournament since losing to Lindsay Davenport in the third round of the U.S. Open, had 10 double faults and committed 29 unforced errors.
“No loss is a lot of fun,” Williams said. “My serve wasn’t there the way I wanted it to be today.”
Williams broke Bovina in the first game of the second set, but the Russian capitalized on a string of unforced errors to make it 2-2 in the fourth game, when the American double-faulted on a deuce.
Bovina then won four consecutive game to end the match in 61 minutes.
“I wouldn’t say it was easy,” Bovina said. “I opened well and my task was not to allow her to get into her game. I did it.”
The 19-year-old Russian advanced to a tournament semifinal for the third time this season. She won the Pilot Pen in August.
She will face compatriot Elena Dementieva, who ousted yet another Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-1, 6-3.
New world No. 1 Lindsay Davenport of the United States defeated Francesca Schiavone of Italy 6-4, 6-1 to secure her spot in the semis against French Open and defending Kremlin Cup champion Anastasia Myskina, who came back from a set down to defeat countrywoman Vera Zvonareva 4-6, 6-0, 7-5.
In the men’s quarterfinals, British veteran Greg Rusedski upset second-seeded Joachim Johansson of Sweden 7-6 (5), 6-7 (1), 7-6 (7). He will play third-seeded Dominik Hrbaty of Slovakia, who beat Russian Igor Kunitsyn 7-6 (2), 6-4.
In early action, eighth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia ousted Radek Stepanek of the Czech Republic 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-1 to set up the first ever men’s all-Russian semifinal match here against fifth-seeded Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark 6-2, 7-6 (5).
